The “Staff of Life” or “A Lot of Fluff”? Making Sense of Gluten

It seems almost “anti-life” to not eat bread, whole wheat and bread products.

After all, it is the “staff of life” and even Jesus ate it to commemorate His body

betrayal-last-supperbeing broken for mankind and told us to do likewise in His remembrance.

womeninconversationSo, when one shuns this “life-giving” food, many peers and family members probably have many questions streaming in their minds.

Gluten has become the new buzz word in our society.

glutenfreetagsGluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, and often in oats.

Gluten-free sections are popping up from mainstream grocery stores to football stadiums.

Yet, many are still unclear as to what this means, and unfortunately, the misconception is that this is a special section only for those with a severe allergy to gluten or have  an official diagnosis and order to eliminate it from their diet.

The reality is, the gluten we now consume in this country is virtually all tainted with proteins that are too large for most everyone to properly digest.

celiac villiCeliac disease which is a true gluten allergy causes severe damage to the villi in the small intestines. This allergic reaction flattens these finger-like projections, which are the nutrient absorbers and digesters  of food.

This sets off a series of health problems and even death if  a gluten allergy goes undiagnosed and gluten is continued to be consumed.

But this new “gluten trend” is not just for this severe allergy of Celiac Disease.

The question so many ask is why there are now the sudden increase in gluten intolerances when it seems we have only started hearing of it in recent years.  Others wonder if it’s just the new health band wagon to jump on.

The answer lies somewhere between the truth of what gluten was, what is has morphed into, and what the  implications are for our bodies.

Our digestive system was designed to break down proteins and use them for many needed life giving and WonderBreadsustaining functions.

This was an easier task before the introduction of the fluffy white breads, like wonder bread.

Our society’s desire to modify this “staff of life” to be the “fluff of life”,
caused the actual wheat grains to be modified to have many more and larger proteins than were on the ancient grains that were more dense.

wheat-beautifulThis new gluten strain has cross-pollenated and affected nearly every strain of gluten-containing foods.

We are now seeing the effects and the “dark” side of our “light” bread products.

The results have been insidious as these undigested protein molecules have caused leaking into our blood streams and attacking our immune systems as “foreign invaders”.
They have also caused an attack on the lining of our intestines, which creates little holes that allow more “foreign substances” of undigested food into our bloodstream called ” leaky gut syndrome”.

These have a wide range of how they show up as symptoms in the body.
There have been studies showing that everything from
Arthritis to depression can be attributed to the gluten “sensitivities”.

The list of many of these that have been documented are:

Gas, bloating, loose or oily stools, constipation
Abdominal pain, nausea, abdominal distention, or flatulence
Gastric and duodenal ulcers or esophageal reflux

Joint or muscle pain that does not appear to be caused by activity or exercise

Infertility, miscarriages,
Fatigue, mood changes, depression, or anxiety

Thyroid malfunctions,
Diabetes mellitus,
Rheumatoid arthritis, childhood asthma,

However, as the misconception continues. The vast majority who have auto immune disorders, skin disorders and many other ailments have no idea that what they are consuming are causing this havoc on their bodies.

Concerned people who have been hearing this gluten buzz word feel some of these symptoms and go to “get checked” by their doctor.

However, tests that can be done are often skewed for various reasons as false positives or false negatives, which gives the patients a “green light” to eat gluten to their stomachs’ content because a lab or doctor says they are “clear”.

Meanwhile, their health continues to decline while chasing symptoms that could easily be remedied by simply eliminating all forms if gluten.

The best way to really find out if someone is sensitive to gluten to completely eliminate it for 2-4 weeks from their diet and then reintroduce it and see what their reaction is.

glutenfreeplaydough2For those that do want to eliminate gluten may find it difficult due to the fact that it is disguised in many things from sauces to envelopes to play-doh.

fruits&vegetablesLabel reading becomes critical, including creating homemade sauces and eating less processed foods and more fruits and vegetables.

Here are some sneaky ways gluten can be hidden.
These acronyms spell gluten:

Fu—dried wheat gluten
HPP—hydrolyzed plant protein
HVP—hydrolyzed vegetable protein
MSG—monosodium glutamate
TPP—textured plant protein
TVP—textured vegetable protein

The healing process of our gut from the effects of gluten can seem monumental and the idea of eliminating this staple of our diets overwhelming.

However, it can be done much easier in our society who is now recognizing gluten as a problem.

Many products can be substituted for gluten containing foods and the enjoyment of the comfort foods can continue with a little more seeking and learning how to prepare the healthier version of the “guilty pleasures”.
Our bodies can become a healing “well oiled machine” again if we remove the foreign foods that are counter-productive to our bodies functions.

Giving it the life promoting foods it craves will help it heal itself and put us on the road to a healthier vibrant life.

CoconutFlourCheck out one of my favorite healing gluten flour substitutes in my article about Coconut Flour!!! Read it HERE!

As a former gluten junkie, I have learned to find immense enjoyment in other foods and my body thanks me daily as I know yours will, too!

To your vibrant health,

From Guilty Pleasure to Healthy Treasure: COCONUT FLOUR

stealingcookiesIn our quest for healthier ingredients, coconut flour is a wonderful choice.
Most of us have grown up with and are accustomed to our baked goods as “guilty pleasures”.

However, discovering truths about components that are in these, like gluten, which can wreak havoc on our health, has depressed many of us as we have felt like we had to say good-bye to these yummy comfort foods.
The great news is, coconut flour can be used as a substitute for most flours in any recipe.

It is a by-product of the coconut milk production and is made from the left-over dried coconut fiber.

Coconut cream production, Chiang Mai, ThailandIt has has many health promoting benefits:

Coconut flour is naturally gluten-free. Also, unlike almond flour, which is often used to replace glutenous flours, it is not difficult for most to digest and is not highly allergenic.

It is the highest in fiber, 58%,  or 6 grams in two tablespoons, of any flour, including wheat germ, double the amount in wheat flour and 5 times as much as brown rice flour.

The non-trans fat oil content is 14% and is derived from healthy medium chain healthy fats.

These qualities along with less digestible carbs than any other flour on the market, makes it a low-glycemic index food, and helps with blood sugar regulation as well as create a feeling of fullness.

It boasts 5 grams of protein in just two tablespoons.

This naturally sweet light textured flour is also high in lauric acid, which is also in breast milk, giving it its antiviral, antimicrobial and anti- fungal properties.

Substituting this health promoting flour for the old stand-bys that contain gluten takes some recipe adjusting.

Since gluten gives other flours their glue and fluffiness, a binder is needed since this is absent in coconut flour.

eggsAdding eggs to the mixture creates a similar effect as traditional flours.

A decrease in the amount of coconut flour to substitute for the regular flours called for in recipes is needed.

Substitute  1/4 cup to 1/3 cup coconut flour for 1 cup grain-based flour in baked goods.
The rule of thumb to bake with coconut flour is add 6 beaten eggs plus one cup of liquid like coconut milk to one cup of coconut flour.

MashedWhiteBeansTo increase the moisture in your baked goods, you can also add cooked, pureed or mashed fruit or vegetables.

An equal amount of coconut flour can be used for dredging and frying that is equivalent to wheat or other flours.
Coconut flour can also be added to smoothies, sauces and gravies.
Our guilty pleasures can become our healthy pleasures by adding in nutrient rich ingredients like coconut flour. So, indulge in your favorites and find comfort on knowing you are doing something great for your body in the process.

Sugar, Baby!!!

mmsI recently was at my kids’ gymnastics and I saw a nice mommy take out a mini m&m pack and give it to her little girl.

She looked to be about 2 years old.

momandm&msI sat and watched as this calm little girl downed nearly the entire container, leaving behind hands full of melt in your “mouth” food dyes.

This scenario really captivated me and I constrained myself from striking up a conversation with the mom to ask a few questions.

There were some things I honestly wanted to know, and without judging the situation.

My questions still remain…

They are:
1. When you decide to give your kids a “treat”, what are your thoughts before actually giving it to them?
2. Do you think about what’s in the candy or just unconsciously give it to them?
3. Do you think there are any consequences to the candy or is it just an innocent treat that is harmless?
This has been heavily on my mind lately with Halloween around the corner, and rows and rows of candy moved in front and center of every store.

It’s not only heavily accepted but EXPECTED to load our kids up to the gills with every texture, color and sweet and tart treat that is handed to them this season.

So, my thoughts have shaken down to the reality that people must REALLY NOT KNOW what it is they are giving their kids and the dangers behind it.

whitesugarI would like to shed some light on the dark side of the white crystals and other refined sugars that pervade our food supply and culture.

Could it be that sugar could be classified as a drug?

A 2007 study found that sugar is more addictive than cocaine. The group of researchers conducting the study found that sugar surpasses what is called “cocaine reward” in most mammals, including rats and humans.

In another study, rats were given a choice between sugar, water and cocaine. 94% them chose sugar. Even the rats that had previously been addicted to cocaine switched to the sugar once it was a choice.

This does not seem far- fetched as we look at the astronomical increase in sugar consumption over the last few years since the introduction of high fructose corn syrup.

mmw_obesityMan-Drinking-SodaPresently, 17% of U.S. children and teens are obese, and across the globe the sugar intake has tripled in the past 50 years.

Our consumption of sugar is now at 180lbs per person per year, which is double from what it was in 1900.

According to the American Heart Association the average adult consumes 22 tsp/day and teens are up to 34 tsp/day.

Sugar_BadThere are very explainable reasons on why the increase in our sugar consumption is causing a health crisis in our country.

When we eat sugar, there is a cascade effect that occurs in our bodies that puts a tremendous amount of stress on the organs and systems of our bodies.
Our White Blood Cells, which are our main warriors against invaders, are immediately weakened for at least 20 minutes after indulging in that sweet “treat”.

The pancreas gets a signal to start pumping out insulin on overdrive to deal with the high concentration of refined and toxic levels of simple sugars, which our bodies were never designed to handle.

This triggers the “bad fats” AKA LDL’s to increase.
The liver is brought into the process, resulting in is excess fat storage.

The pancreas can only use so much of its precious insulin.  Over time, there is simply not enough to excrete to keep up with the load of sugar continuing to come down the pike, leaving us with type 2 Diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, with fat accumulation giving us that “spare tire” and our liver becoming “fatty”.

Unable to properly perform the critical detoxifying and eliminating functions, the body becomes like a toxic waste dump, and leaving in its wake the feeling as if being run over by the “Dump truck”.

Sugar also interrupts the communication of insulin to two important messengers which tell us we are hungry and full.

Therefore, we continue to think we are hungry and crave more food, perpetuating this vicious obesity, sick cycle.

sugarLet’s talk about where the refined white sugar actually comes from.

Most of us unconsciously eat whatever is the tastiest most beautiful food set before us without any real thought about where it actually came from

sugarcane&sugarbeetSugar Cane and Sugar Beets are the most common sources for our white sugar.

It is not disclosed in most instances of where the source is from.

The beets are genetically modified  most of the time and at least half of the sugar gets it’s snow “white” hue from the ash of bones from casualties of the meat industry.

bonechar&sugarTheir bones are sold to the sugar industry, who burn them and use the ash to whiten the sugar crystals.

It sounds like a convoluted mess.

The High Fructose Corn Syrup industry takes the “cake” by amping up the sugar hfcscontent by deriving the sugar from government subsidized corn in a lab to chemically create a substance that has skyrocketed our poor health issues beyond belief.

Fatty hearts, athlerosclerotic lesions in our arteries, fatty livers, bellies, booties and bodies don’t seem to be motivation to kick the sugar our of our diet..

But perhaps information about the scientific research and startling truth about the sugar/cancer love affair would wake us out of our sugar “slump”?

The mere fact that conventional medicine uses a “sugar uptake” test to see where the cancer resides is fascinating.

It turns out that cancer lives anaerobically. It does not need oxygen to survive, but thrives on the composition of sugar that decreases the pH level in our blood, creating the perfect “acidic” environment for it to thrive and grow.

needle_libThey inject the sugar water and the cancer immediately lights up as it begins to come alive with its delicacy to continue its destruction mission.
However, when the test is done, and if we are in the hospital, we may get jello, pie, ice cream, juice, crackers or any a sundry of sugar laden choices.

As a nurse, my colleagues and I didn’t bat an eye at this blind vicious cycle we were contributing to. I’m certain this continues daily in the rooms of hospitals around our nation.

The fact of the matter is, most of us do not make the connection to sugar as a huge culprit for the menace of cancer.

We continue our aimless campaigns and fund raisers and donate buckets of money to “find a cure”, instead of educating consumers of the grave dangers lurking in their pantries, refrigerators and on every corner.
The FDA seems to turn a blind eye to the gigantic elephant in the room and the trusting consumer continues eating himself to death.

Unfortunately, because it functions like a drug, even when we do become “aware”, we continue to fall helpless to its beckoning call.

The pervasiveness of this substance in our food supply goes unnoticed by most unsuspecting consumers.

HappyKidsSo, what about our kids!?
How is this substance abusing their developing bodies?

Their immune systems are so delicate.

The more we continue to interrupt the normal functions of their bodies, the more likely they are to develop childhood obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Their ability to fight off germs, viruses and other invaders becomes increasingly weakened.

The increase in allergies can be linked to our weakened immune systems as well.

The sad projection is that this may be the first generation where the parents outlive their own kids.

fast-foodBeginning to understand the dangers of sugar is the first KEY to bringing about change in our culture.

Most of us, as I am sure the mom at my kids’ gymnastics class, certainly do not healthyalternativewant to harm our kids.  We are doing the best we can with the knowledge we presently have.

The more we understand this information, the more we can begin to take the steps to transition toward healthier alternatives and begin to see our health improve and waistline shrink.

CrossroadsWe are at a crossroads for ourselves and our nation.

Will we begin to say “no” to the pressure of society to give our kids sugar at every turn from birthday parties to holidays to the little “rewards”?

We can make a change and a difference for ourselves and our children.

“Soy Mama” Revelation

silksoymilk_jpg1Being a “lactose” intolerant girl, I thought I had found pay dirt with soy milk.

starbuckslatteIn my mind and as I understood it,  my calcium replacement came in the form of daily (sometimes more) soy lattes with one pump of toffee nut from Starbucks.

Soy milk replaced dairy on my cereal and any soy protein bar was welcome in my snack bag.

My lattes were the coveted part of my day and I looked forward to each one with delight and great pleasure.
I drank them throughout my first pregnancy with confidence that I was getting a double whammy of my yummy experience as well as giving my baby and me the calcium we needed.

When my baby daughter was born, she had a little light brown mark on her hand that we affectionately referred to as her “latte spot”.

earthsbestsoyI breast fed her until she was 6 months old, which at the time was the “gold standard”.

I switched her to organic soy formula and as a first time mom, without a background in babies and childcare, I thought I really was doing a fabulous job.

She immediately began having the worst constipation issues imaginable. I took her to the doctor, but the soy formula issue was never in question.

The remedy that was given was in the form of drugs (suppositories)  or adding some glycerinsuppositoriestype of oil to her bottles.

constipatedbabySad to say, these did not work, and we battled with excruciating digestive problems for her baby years.

The proverbial “I wish I knew now” saying rings very true with my food choices during these important years.

Since then, I have come to understand the significance and dangers of soy in our diet.

industrialwasteSpecifically in infant formula, the soy is generally made from soy protein isolate (SPI).

SPI is a protein-rich powder extracted by an industrial process from the waste product of soy oil manufacturing.

During the processing of soy, many additional toxins are formed, including nitrates (which are carcinogens) and a toxin called lysinoalanine.  In studies, it has also shown to cause B12 and zinc deficiencies.

Soy is one of the top culprits in food allergies.

Unfermented soy has been linked to “estrogen dominance” in a woman’s body.
Soy can also suppress the thyroid, which can lower energy and create other health problems.
This was played out in my body as I suffered with chronic fatigue and a myriad of symptoms I have since found out are linked to consuming soy.

It can depress the immune system as well as cause endocrine system imbalances and decrease libido.

Sneezing-womanMy immune system had been so weakened that I would get a cold if someone sneezed across town.

My daily soy lattes, protein bars, and soy milk for my cereal were certainly contributing.

It was also setting me and my baby up for an increased risk of endometriosis, heart disease and cancer, specifically breast cancer.
It seems unreal that unfermented soy products can continue to be on the market and promoted as a health food.

FDA-ApprovedMost of us, as I did, simply trust the system that is set up to protect us and our health.

But, as you begin to peel back the marketing layers and get to the truth, you will find answers and become more empowered to make the best and most informed choices.

Although I wish I had this knowledge when I was pregnant to avoid the many pitfalls of consuming soy, I am blessed to be able to share it with you so perhaps you can live a more vibrantly healthy life with your kids.

Please refer to this article for more insight into why FERMENTED SOY is a better option.

Honoring His Path: A Gracefully, Healthy Valentines Day

ONEFoodClassHouseYou have had a revelation about your food and are learning about superfoods and changing the way you prepare them!
MIC (216 of 235)
You are so excited and enjoying this new found way of life and eating.

However, you may have discovered that your husband may not share your same sentiments!
If your husband is like most, he may be pushing back and even grumpy about it.

VdayWith Valentines Day only a few days away, I wanted to take a few minutes to share some tips and insight into ways to nurture and honor the men in our lives, even if they do not share our views or are on the same path as us.

When I first began my journey, I went “all in”. Even though I was transitioning while learning, I was still very committed to the healthy choices.

disappointedhusbandHowever, in doing so, I realized my choices were not particularly celebrated by my husband.

I have been learning the importance of grace to give those we love as we make new discoveries.

I had a very wise woman share with me at the very beginning when I was actually annoyed and upset that my husband wouldn’t see it how I saw it and care as much about his health as I did.lightintrees

She shed light into my life that I feel important to share with you.

She told me that the path that my husband was on was his own path.

He came for a completely separate background and life experiences than I had.

She went on to share that although I may desire certain things for him or want him to “change”, it is not my responsibility to try to make it happen.

man-walking-on-path-in-forestMy responsibility is to bless and honor exactly where he is on his own journey.

The point is, if your husband is in a place and making choices you feel are not the best, have compassion for him, love him and continue on your own journey.
While he may not share all of your views, he will be appreciative if you honor his place by preparing foods that continue to appeal to his taste buds and where HE IS on his journey!
Woman reads book

I am still in the learning process, as I’m sure I will be until my time is over on this earth.

I am learning that I can prepare his favorite foods, if I learn healthier ways and ingredients to add.
Our MIC partner, Jessica Lopez, wrote a very insightful blog about helping with this process!

Please read it, and remember in your “healthifying”, do it with honor, grace and love!

WHITE-WASHED: Milky-White Lies

schoollunchMilk- the white liquid that flows throughout the fabric of our society.
It is so accepted and expected that we have been “white-washed” into believing that if we don’t give our kids cows milk, we are depriving them of vital nutrients that will have detrimental results to their growth.

gotmilkbabyHowever, the milk industry has a big stake in keeping this myth perpetuated and spends an enormous amount of money to ensure it.
The milk of today that lines our grocery store cooler shelves is not the same milk from the days of cow’s milk from a farm.

The cows that produce the massive amounts of milk demanded from our white washed society are factory farmed.
cowsgrazingThis means they live in close quarters, in conditions that are not conducive to a “happy cow” life, which means sickness is much more prevalent than in they grazed on the grass in a green pasture.

This requires many medications including antibiotics.

milking-cowsBecause the mama cows are needed for massive milk production, they are milked continuously through pregnancy, post birth, and through the next impregnation without breaks, being stripped of their calves after birth.

They are also given hormones to keep the milk production at a desired high level.
Then this white “gold” has to be pasteurized to kill all the pathogens from the “less than sterile” and many times filthy conditions.

jugs-of-milkThe end result that makes it to our plastic jugs is a beautiful white liquid from a factory merging of cows that is filled with traces of medications, hormones and often “pus”.

The rBgh that is a genetically modified hormone made by Monsanto has been linked to woman-drinking-frappuccinoincrease the chances of cancer, yet it is still allowed to be used and fill up bottles for babies and make frothy lattes everywhere.

Our society mindlessly sip, and guzzle this glorified drink and has no idea of the process that it took and from where it came from.

The health implications are many, including the notorious “lactose intolerance” that many complain of when ingesting milk products.

This is because the enzyme “lactase”, which is required to break down the lactose for digestion is destroyed in the pasteurization process.

Milk is also very mucus producing, exacerbating allergies and colds.

Kids-and-ColdsEar infections and other upper airway issues and illnesses have been highly linked to the consumption of pasteurized dairy products.

The truth is there are many other sources that are bioavailable in lieu of cow’s milk for our calcium and other minerals to help us build healthy bones and bodies.

The highest incident to osteoporosis is in countries who drink THE MOST cow’s milk, not the opposite.  (Click HERE to read article.)
A few alternatives are freshly made almond, hemp or coconut milk.
(see how to make your own almond milk HERE.)

Fresh organic green leafy vegetables are a great source of calcium, especially kale and can be easily incorporated into delicious smoothies. (see how to make the smoothie HERE.)

FoodswithCalciumHere is a great chart to see some foods high in calcium.

Finding the best sources of nutrition may mean thinking out of the “box” or “carton” and washing your minds with truth, without being led by others who have an agenda other than your vibrant health.

Make it the “right white”.

What are You DYEing For?

Three years ago today I was blessed with a ray of sunshine from above.

sprinklesredvelvetMy sweet hubby took good care of me by weekly runs to “Sprinkles Cupcakes” to bring me an abundant supply of red velvet with cream cheese frosting!
After all, nothing says love like sprinkles, right?

The immediate gratification was euphoric and I was very territorial about those delicious, deep red delicacies!  It seems this is quite a normal and accepted concept.  Of course, kids are drawn to sprinkles and bright colors that entice them and draw them in to the “fun yummiess”.

Isn’t that what life should be all about?5-senses

We have been created with 5 senses for a reason. Enjoyment is certainly one of the reasons for them.  Nature provides us an array of brightly colored foods that have a purpose to help and support the health of our bodies.
But we have learned how to artificially replicate the colors we were given to help us.  The result has given us the false illusion that these are more delicious and provide more fulfillment than that what’s given to us naturally.

coloredcakeThe unfortunate truth is they have dulled us to the reality of natural pleasures that come without cost.  Instead we are lured by vibrant colors, which are laden with chemicals and the trap of unnatural highs.

The sugar, in and of itself, actually is and meets the criteria of being a drug and is 4x more addictive than cocaine.

So why are the dyes needed to top off products that may already carry a lure all by themselves?

SkittlesFirst, our sense of sight has been proven to dictate our choices so heavily that companies build entire divisions to focus just on creating the perfect color hue to entice us.

Second, without products being colored, the end result of stripping, processing and chemicalizing them would leave a dull and mostly putrid color scheme.  This would probably deter us from choosing them.

mmsSight is such a crucial part of marketing products to us, that to alter this method of dying our goods would mean a huge loss for major players in the world of processed foods.  It would really be a huge loss to all of them.

The issue at hand is then, why shouldn’t dyes be allowed?
It’s a free capitalist society and perhaps this shouldn’t be questioned.
However, testing and safety of what is allowed in our good supply is supposed to be mandated with the best interest of the consumers, not the pockets of the companies who produce them.

In depth studies have been conducted on food dyes and have come up with results that have raised red flags high and large.
Colored tongues 2
A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Lancet concluded that a variety of common food dyes as well as the preservative sodium benzoate cause some children to become measurably more hyperactive and distractible.

"May have an adverse effect on activity and attention of children"So much so, that the UK has since July 2010, taken a stand against these food dyes. Their Food Standard Agency issued an immediate advisory to parents with a warning to limit their children’s intact of additives if they notice it having an effect on them.
From this warning and the mandate to label foods with dyes in them has all but nearly eliminated them from being used in the products for their citizens.  The ones that remain contain warning labels stating that the food “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children”.

However, here in the US, our safety umbrella of the FDA has failed to open enough to cover us with these standards of protection.

They have taken a round about stance on the proof that food dyes are deniably harmful, by stating in March 2011 that the “FDA concludes a causal relationship between exposure to color additives and hyperactivity in children in the general population has not been established”.

Dr. Feingold, in hallmark studies found overwhelming evidence of the link between them and ADHD and hyperactivity symptoms in children.

Numerous studies with food dyes have linked them with increase risk of cancer and other health concerns ranging from cancer and hyperactivity to allergy-line reactions.

food-coloringRed dye # 2 was taken off shelves in 1976, after findings linked it to being a suspected carcinogen.

The most commonly used food dye; Red Dye #40 may accelerate the appearance of immune-system tumors in rats and hyperactivity in kids.

Blue #2 has been linked to brain tumors.
Yellow #5 has been linked to containing several cancer-causing chemicals as well as hyperactivity, hypersensitivity and other behavioral effects in kids.

It doesn’t logically make sense to continue these potential threats to our family’s health, especially our children’s, as if we’re conducting some type of ongoing science experiment on them before these dyes are finally pulled from our shelves.
Ice Cream
GatoradeBut take a look around…Because food dyes are so widely used and accepted, moms and dads don’t think twice about feeding it to their kids.

It’s rather encouraged and laughed about as kids have blue tongues, help make cookies and cupcakes with lots of sprinkles, and to pouring sports drinks into all our little athletes’ mouths during games and practices.

The light must begin to shine in the understanding of the fact that it DOES matter and that the choices we make CAN and DO affect our kids.

Fruit and colorsAfter my health failed and I learned the connection these food choices were making on my body, I was able to finally give up my beloved and coveted “sprinkles”.  I began to become alive again to the love and enjoyment of foods that are naturally and beautifully colored, especially as they began to support my body’s ability to heal itself.

It’s not easy when you don’t have a why…It’s actually very painful…

But knowledge is power and strength can come to all of us as we learn and unite and vote with our dollar!

Next time, start a new trend!  Hold the sprinkles and pour on the vibrant life of true color!

Mountain Top Experience

mountaintopexperienceLooking down through the fluffy white clouds, I reflect on my amazing ” mountain-Carl50top” experience to celebrate my husband reaching the half century mark.

As I sit reviewing the amazing experience, I realize the best part about my trip wasn’t the majestic mountains, breath-taking views, exquisite accommodations,  fabulous food, and fun skiing.

Carl50FunIt was spending the time with some of my dearest, closest friends on the planet.

bestfriendsSince we all live in different and opposite parts of the country, getting together is few and far between.

Most of us have to move heaven and earth to finagle our schedules.

Our time is so precious, that it has stopped me in my thinking tracks.
We are all blessed with good health, even though some of us have already had the big C scare.
I picked up The USA Today paper my husband bought out if boredom, since I had to turn off my electronic equipment. Although I know the cancer epidemic is growing, I saw new startling statistics printed.

1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime.

This information, coupled with hearing that a medical doctor had prescribed 7 different antibiotics to my girlfriend’s 18 year old daughter in just ONE YEAR, has me reeling.

This is the rub:

I love my friends. I want to see them all again and for many healthy years.
We may be that group that defy the statistics. I hope so.

Pharmacist Holding Pill BottleThe sad reality is, our standard American system and “trust” is in the hands of the WRONG PEOPLE!
Many of us are just NOT INFORMED about what to do to stay on the positive side of these sad numbers.
Many still run to the doctor to “pill their ills” because they do not know there are other ways!

To stay healthy requires information.

Without knowing how to keep our immune system strong, understanding what is in our foods and products and how it affects our bodies and how to fight against the attacks on them as a first line defense, will leave us feeling helpless and vulnerable to do whatever the “powers that be” have to help us.pills

Unfortunately, as in the case of my friend’s daughter, it is almost always drugs.

So, what can I do?

DottyWalkingA prophet has no honor in his own country, but yet, I will continue to do my best to walk the walk, talk the talk, learn and make myself available for those searching and looking for healthier alternatives to help them on their health journey.
As Moms In Charge moves forward, it’s my desire that more people will get empowered, share their info with others and create a ripple effect in our nation to begin turning the tide on cancer and other health thieves.

I was honored to be asked by my girlfriend to write down some things to help her precious daughter begin to heal from this health crisis.

She may become a health warrior and help change her sphere of influence …That’s my hope anyway. 😉

Learn, share and live vibrantly so we can all have more “mountain-top” experiences!
