Sugar, Baby!!!

I recently was at my kids’ gymnastics and I saw a nice mommy take out a mini m&m pack and give it to her little girl.

She looked to be about 2 years old.

I sat and watched as this calm little girl downed nearly the entire container, leaving behind hands full of melt in your “mouth” food dyes.

This scenario really captivated me and I constrained myself from striking up a conversation with the mom to ask a few questions.

There were some things I honestly wanted to know, and without judging the situation.

My questions still remain.
They are:
1. When you decide to give your kids a “treat”, what are your thoughts before actually giving it to them?
2. Do you think about what’s in the candy or just unconsciously give it to them?
3. Do you think there are any consequences to the candy or is it just an innocent treat that is harmless?

This has been heavily on my mind lately with Halloween around the corner, and rows and rows of candy moved in front and center of every store.

It’s not only heavily accepted but EXPECTED to load our kids up to the gills with every texture, color and sweet and tart treat that is handed to them this season.

So, my thoughts have shaken down to the reality that people must REALLY NOT KNOW what it is they are giving their kids and the dangers behind it.

I would like to shed some light on the dark side of the white crystals and other refined sugars that pervade our food supply and culture.
Could it be that sugar could be classified as a drug?
A 2007 study found that sugar is more addictive than cocaine. The group of researchers conducting the study found that sugar surpasses what is called “cocaine reward” in most mammals, including rats and humans.

In another study, rats were given a choice between sugar, water and cocaine. 94% them chose sugar. Even the rats that had previously been addicted to cocaine switched to the sugar once it was a choice.

This does not seem far- fetched as we look at the astronomical increase in sugar consumption over the last few years since the introduction of high fructose corn syrup.

Presently, 17% of U.S. children and teens are obese, and across the globe the sugar intake has tripled in the past 50 years.
Our consumption of sugar is now at 180lbs per person per year, which is double from what it was in 1900.

According to the American Heart Association the average adult consumes 22 tsp/day and teens are up to 34 tsp/day.

There are very explainable reasons on why the increase in our sugar consumption is causing a health crisis in our country.

When we eat sugar, there is a cascade effect that occurs in our bodies that puts a tremendous amount of stress on the organs and systems of our bodies.

IMMUNE SYSTEM:
Our White Blood Cells, which are our main warriors against invaders, are immediately weakened for at least 20 minutes after indulging in that sweet “treat”.

The pancreas gets a signal to start pumping out insulin on overdrive to deal with the high concentration of refined and toxic levels of simple sugars, which our bodies were never designed to handle.

This triggers the “bad fats” AKA LDL’s to increase.
The liver is brought into the process, resulting in is excess fat storage.

The pancreas can only use so much of its precious insulin.  Over time, there is simply not enough to excrete to keep up with the load of sugar continuing to come down the pike, leaving us with type 2 Diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, with fat accumulation giving us that “spare tire” and our liver becoming “fatty”.

Unable to properly perform the critical detoxifying and eliminating functions, the body becomes like a toxic waste dump, and leaving in its wake the feeling as if being run over by the “Dump truck”.

Sugar also interrupts the communication of insulin to two important messengers which tell us we are hungry and full.

Therefore, we continue to think we are hungry and crave more food, perpetuating this vicious obesity, sick cycle.

Let’s talk about where the refined white sugar actually comes from.

Most of us unconsciously eat whatever is the tastiest most beautiful food set before us without any real thought about where it actually came from.

Sugar Cane and Sugar Beets are the most common sources for our white sugar.

It is not disclosed in most instances of where the source is from.
The beets are genetically modified  most of the time and at least half of the sugar gets it’s snow “white” hue from the ash of bones from casualties of the meat industry.

Their bones are sold to the sugar industry, who burn them and use the ash to whiten the sugar crystals.

It sounds like a convoluted mess.

The High Fructose Corn Syrup industry takes the “cake” by amping up the sugar content by deriving the sugar from government subsidized corn in a lab to chemically create a substance that has skyrocketed our poor health issues beyond belief.

Fatty hearts, athlerosclerotic lesions in our arteries, fatty livers, bellies, booties and bodies don’t seem to be motivation to kick the sugar our of our diet..

But perhaps information about the scientific research and startling truth about the sugar/cancer love affair would wake us out of our sugar “slump”?

The mere fact that conventional medicine uses a “sugar uptake” test to see where the cancer resides is fascinating.

It turns out that cancer lives anaerobically. It does not need oxygen to survive, but thrives on the composition of sugar that decreases the pH level in our blood, creating the perfect “acidic” environment for it to thrive and grow.

They inject the sugar water and the cancer immediately lights up as it begins to come alive with its delicacy to continue its destruction mission.

However, when the test is done, and if we are in the hospital, we may get jello, pie, ice cream, juice, crackers or any a sundry of sugar laden choices.

As a nurse, my colleagues and I didn’t bat an eye at this blind vicious cycle we were contributing to. I’m certain this continues daily in the rooms of hospitals around our nation.

The fact of the matter is, most of us do not make the connection to sugar as a huge culprit for the menace of cancer.

We continue our aimless campaigns and fund raisers and donate buckets of money to “find a cure”, instead of educating consumers of the grave dangers lurking in their pantries, refrigerators and on every corner.

The FDA seems to turn a blind eye to the gigantic elephant in the room and the trusting consumer continues eating himself to death.

Unfortunately, because it functions like a drug, even when we do become “aware”, we continue to fall helpless to its beckoning call.

The pervasiveness of this substance in our food supply goes unnoticed by most unsuspecting consumers.

So, what about our kids!?
How is this substance abusing their developing bodies?

Their immune systems are so delicate.

The more we continue to interrupt the normal functions of their bodies, the more likely they are to
develop childhood obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Their ability to fight off germs, viruses and other invaders becomes increasingly weakened.

The increase in allergies can be linked to our weakened immune systems as well.

The sad projection is that this may be the first generation where the parents outlive their own kids.

Beginning to understand the dangers of sugar is the first KEY to bringing about change in our culture.

Most of us, as I am sure the mom at my kids’ gymnastics class, certainly do not want to harm our kids.  We are doing the best we can with the knowledge we presently have.

The more we understand this information, the more we can begin to take the steps to transition toward healthier alternatives and begin to see our health improve and waistline shrink.

We are at a crossroads for ourselves and our nation.

Will we begin to say “no” to the pressure of society to give our kids sugar at every turn from birthday parties to holidays to the little “rewards”?

We can make a change and a difference for ourselves and our children.
