Just Breathe

on February 8, 2012

The lyrics of a song I found myself singing often a few years ago made famous by one of my heroes, Faith Hill  has taken on new meaning lately.

Back in the day when I used to belt out the tunes and hit the notes of ‘Just Breathe’ was a time when it meaning was tied to some romantic notion with a man of my dreams.

Singing karaoke or at parties pretending to be a version of Faith Hill was truly a fun and exciting time.

But, time has moved along, 3 kids have been added to the mix and just breathing has morphed into keeping myself calm through sleepless nights, terrible two’s and dealing with the many issues that arise between siblings.

Then I found yoga and learned even more about how just breathing helped on a deeper level with helping you achieve a better state of mind while working through various difficult poses and gaining more mind body connection.

Through my education as a health coach I have learned more techniques of how to actually breathe and calm the mind and spirit.

But the question has been a bit of a mystery of why the breath is such a key.

As I sat quietly by my husband’s hospital bed, while he was in pain and upset, my entire being seemed to be overcome by helpless frustration.

I was exhausted by a string of sleepless nights with sick kids, overwhelmed with wanting to perfect the message of health and wellness to moms and the looming responsibilities that seemed to swarm around my body. I began to feel the restriction of my throat as the stress of life seemed to take a firm grasp around my airway.

Although fully aware of all my abundant blessings and knowing how much better off I am than so many, the feelings had closed in on me like a walls of my own personal cell.

My husband closed his eyes as he tried to relax all the while, my chest felt frozen.

At that moment I heard a lady walk quietly up to my side. She whispered “Oh, he’s awake.” as my husband looked up into her kind face.  She walked over to his side and gently touched his arm and asked if she could pray with him. Being the spiritual man he is, he said “Um my wife will do that.”  She quietly came and took my hands and said, “We are going to pray together, ok?”

As she prayed, I felt the grasp of fear and anxiety begin to loosen its grip on my neck as she she began to pray about breathing.

I’m actually not certain exactly what she said. All I remember is I began to breathe.  It was as if God knew at that exact moment what I needed and sent an angel to help me breathe.

After she said “Amen.”, she looked at me with the kindest eyes and said “Just Breathe.”

Suddenly those two words that I had sung so many times became alive and penetrated past my head into my spirit.

The next thing she said took me to a place I hope to always remain.

It was a place of hope and truth.  She shared that when we breathe it was breathing in God and His Presence if we would allow it.

I realized what I had somehow missed with my breaths, that I had missed the infinite wisdom of breathing.

Our breath is the life-force. It’s what created us. It’s what continues to create us, but only if we are intentional about it and allow the changes to occur.

As I took those breaths with her, my situation remained the same, but I began to transform and was able to manage the things that were holding me down and was then able to deal with the situations that I was facing.

Taking the time today to breathe in life into whatever situation you find yourself in today can take you past the realm of your physical limitations and into a place of finding hope and peace.
Allow His breath to be yours today and feel your freedom.
